A temperature & pressure relief valve (TPR valve) is a safety device that is installed on a water heater. This valve is designed to prevent the water heater from exploding in the event that the temperature or pressure inside the tank exceeds safe levels.

Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve

The TPR valve is typically located on the top or side of the water heater and has a lever to manually relieve pressure. It is connected to a pipe that runs to the within 6 inches of the ground, allowing any excess pressure or temperature to be safely released.

The valve operates by sensing when the temperature or pressure inside the tank is getting too high. If this happens, the valve will open and allow some of the hot water to escape through the pipe & cold water to be introduced to the tank. This reduces the temperature and pressure inside the tank, preventing it from exploding.

It is important to regularly check the TPR valve to ensure that it is working properly. This can be done by lifting the lever & allowing some water to flow out. If the valve is functioning correctly, water should flow out of the pipe and then stop once the valve is released.

If the TPR valve is not working correctly, it should be replaced immediately by a licensed plumber. Failure to replace a faulty valve can result in serious injury or even death.

In conclusion, a temperature and pressure relief valve is a vital safety device that should be installed on all water heaters. Regular maintenance and testing can help ensure that the valve is working properly and can prevent a dangerous situation from occurring.
